The Science for Prevention Academic Network (SPAN) is funded by the European Commission and involves 32 institutions across 25 European Countries. One objective was to map the education and training needs of the prevention science workforce across Europe.

Methods An electronic survey was developed and piloted in several countries. A list of European prevention scientists was identified from PubMed publication records. A sampling plan, with weighting for country population size and number of PubMed records, was used to target recruitment of participants and achieve a balanced response across countries. The survey was distributed to 353 scientists from 40 countries. Further participants were recruited within each country via a snowball technique. Results 169 questionnaires from 26 countries were completed and returned. Responses were mostly from academic prevention scientists. Most respondents (73%) said that prevention science work was highly or very highly valued by their organisation. A number of prevention science skill and competence deficits were reported: advocacy (75%), grant writing (funding) (67%), program development (58%) and implementation (46%), and project management skills (46%). Responses were similar from prevention workers and junior prevention researchers. Conclusions There is a need for prevention science education and training to be more practically orientated in future. Survey respondents reported on deficits in practical skills and competencies in areas such as development and implementation of prevention programs and funding.
