The Science for Prevention Academic Network (SPAN) is funded by the European Commission and involves 32 institutions across 25 European Countries. SPAN aims to improve the integration of prevention science in the higher education sector and to improve skill mobility across Europe. One objective was to map prevention science in higher education across Europe.

Methods: An electronic survey was developed and piloted in several countries. A list of European prevention scientists was identified from PubMed publication records. A sampling plan, with weighting for country population size and number of PubMed records, was used to target recruitment of participants and achieve a balanced response across countries. The survey was distributed to 353 scientists from 40 countries. Further participants were recruited within each country via a snowball technique. Results 169 questionnaires from 26 countries were completed and returned. English was the leading language for prevention science courses, and the majority of courses (68/71) included information about European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credits. The majority of courses included public and behavioural health topics, with a good spread across epidemiology, policy, qualitative and quantitative methods, and intervention development, evaluation and implementation. Some courses included work experience placements. Conclusions We found only a few dedicated prevention science courses, although prevention science modules and topics were incorporated into many other higher education courses in European countries, with a high level of ECTS integration.
