Perspectives on cannabis treatment in the Czech Republic - health, legislation, politics

Publisher: Ing. Eva Škrdlantová | Last update: 19.06.2010

A parliamentary seminar was held on 8th April 2010 in Prague. While medical cannabis is widely used in many developed countries in order to relieve the symptoms of a number of serious diseases, the Czech Republic has been holding back in this respect until now.

In order to bridge this gap, lawyers, researchers, politicians and medical patients gathered on the premises of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Both political and institutional will was shown with respect to the topic.

First of all, the law forbidding growing cannabis with a THC content higher than 0.3% would have to be changed, so that the Czech legislation is not stricter than UN treaties and regulations on medical cannabis use.

Second, approval is needed from the institution regulating pharmaceutical sales in the Czech Republic. The same institution could possibly issue future licenses for cannabis growing and its medical and research use.

The seminar was attended by the following experts in the field:

  • MUDr. Mgr. Ivan Langer (Parliamentary Deputy)
  • prof. MUDr. Tomáš Zima, DrSc., MBA (Dean of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Prague 1)
  • MUDr. Tomáš Zábranský, Ph.D. (Head of Research and Development Unit, Centre for Addictology, 1st Faculty of Medicine, Prague)
  • doc. PhDr. Michal Miovský, Ph.D. (Head of Centre for Addictology, 1st Faculty of Medicine, Prague)
  • prof. RNDr. Lumír Hanuš, DrSc., Dr.h.c. (Researcher, Hebrew University, Jerusalem)
  • JUDr. Petr Zeman, Ph.D. (Lawyer, Institute for Criminology and Social Prevention, Prague)
  • PharmDr. Martin Beneš (Head of State Regulatory Body for Pharmaceuticals, Prague)
  • RNDr. Eva Marešová (Ministry of Health, Prague)
  • MUDr. Iveta Nováková (Physician, Neurological Clinic, 1st Faculty of Medicine, Prague)
  • Martina Kafková (Head of eRESKA - Association of Multiple Sclerosis Patients)

A Czech transcript of the seminar and abstracts, presentations, the press release, and the final report have been published on www.adiktologie.cz/seminar.
